MA/MARCH – ARCH730, Session 2021, Semester 2
05.2021-06.2021
This module is a continuation of ARCH729 and aims to deepen the introductory knowledge gained in the previous semester. In particular, we will investigate the possibilities arising by incorporating robotic fabrication and assembly into architecture and design. Our semester will start with four introductory workshops focusing on robotic technology and its applications through parametric software (Rhinoceros and Grasshopper) and the robotic firmware RoboDK. In continuation, we will proceed to the development of one modular structure which will be fabricated and assembled using CNC and robotic technologies. The module will operate in teamwork and it consists of 2 phases:
- Phase 01: Learning and exploring robotic assembly.
- Phase 02: Developing a modular structure (wall, small pavilion, design object) which will be robotically assembled by the UR10 robotic arm.
Important Dates
- 13.05.2021 Module introduction, short talks by Jianyang Zhao and Yang Song
- 20.05.2021 Workshop 1 by Yang Song
- 27.05.2021 Workshop 2 by Yang Song
- 03.06.2021 Workshop 3 by Yang Song
- 10.06.2021 Workshop 4 by Yang Song
- 29.07.2021 Final reviews
Presentation / Deliverables
You should deliver a pdf booklet, which will include the research project title, abstract, research aims and questions, as well as the documentation of the entire design process, high-quality images/ videos of the finalised object with its fabrication drawings as well as the final conclusions and research findings. Rhino and Grasshopper files will be submitted as well.
Learning outcomes
You should demonstrate deeper knowledge and application of parametric tools (Rhino and Grasshopper) and digital fabrication techniques in relation to materiality. In addition, you should demonstrate the ability to communicate your design research project to a professional audience.
